A Timeline of the Construction of St. Peter's

St. Peter's basilica was in an incredible state of flux throughout its construction. The structure was begun under Pope Julius II in 1506 and completed by under Paul V in 1615. Throughout this time, the plans were placed in a number of architects, many of whom had varying visions for the completed structure. However, Bramante's influence on the basilica from the beginning was never lost.

The idea of constructing a new church came about under Pope Nicholas V. The Old St. Peter's Basilica was in such poor condition that the frescos were covered in dust and the walls were leaning far outside of their perpendicular position.

St. Peter's Basilica is filled with countless masterpieces of the renaissance and Baroque periods. It was the largest church in Christendom until 1989 when it was exceeded by the new basilica in Yamoussoukro, Côte d'Ivoire.
